Little Bluestem 'Little Red Fox'  (Schizachyrium scoparium 'Little Red Fox')
    Grass Family

‘Little Red Fox’ is a cultivated, dwarf selection of Little Bluestem. Coming in at 2.5' tall with blooms, this is one of the shortest Little Bluestems available. Foliage emerges blue-green in spring, often with tones of purple or maroon at the base. As the season progresses, the leaves deepen in color and transition to shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall. The narrow, upright stems are topped with, silvery seed heads in late summer, providing visual interest and food for birds. Compared to the straight species, ‘Little Red Fox’ is much shorter, more upright, and has strong red coloration. Like other Schizachyrium varieties, it supports native insects and serves as a host plant for several skipper butterfly species. ‘Little Red Fox’ thrives in full sun and dry soils, including sandy or rocky conditions. Avoid fertilization and poorly drained sites, especially in winter.
