Hoary Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum incanum)
Mint FamilyHoary Mountain Mint is one of the best pollinator plants you can add to a garden. Few native species rival its ability to attract and support such a wide diversity of insects. Its dense, nectar-rich flower clusters bloom for many weeks in midsummer, providing a critical food source during a time when many other native plants have finished flowering. You’ll find a diverse array of bees, butterflies, wasps, and beetles visiting it daily. Its silvery, hoary foliage also gives it a distinct texture and brightness in the landscape, especially when planted alongside darker greens or prairie grasses. Unlike some of its more aggressive cousins, P. incanum tends to stay in bounds, forming tidy clumps rather than spreading aggressively. It grows best in average soils in part sun to, though it can tolerate a wider range of conditions. It is drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and prefers lean soils with good drainage over rich or consistently wet conditions.
