Meehan’s Mint (Meehania cordata)
Mint FamilyMeehan’s Mint is a low-growing, native mint that forms a dense groundcover in shady garden settings. It spreads by stolons, creating a mat of heart-shaped leaves that remain attractive throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer, it produces tubular purple flowers with lighter markings that are visited by a variety of native bees. Despite being in the mint family, it is not aggressive and is easy to manage in garden settings. This species prefers part shade to full shade and moist soils. It is a good choice for shaded borders, underplanting shrubs, or naturalizing in woodland gardens. While it appreciates consistent moisture, it can tolerate dry spells once established. Good companion plants include spring ephemerals, Alumroots, Foamflower, Sedges, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Black Cohosh, and Wild Hydrangea.
