    Scaly Blazing-star  (Liatris squarrosa)
    Aster Family

Scaly Blazing-star is a compact, drought-tolerant native perennial known for its vibrant magenta-purple flower heads that bloom in mid to late summer. Unlike most Liatris, it prefers dry, sandy or rocky soils and doesn’t form tall, dense spikes—instead, it features fewer, larger flower heads spaced along a stout stem, with distinctly spreading, pointed bracts (the “scales” that give it its name). This species stays around 1–2 feet tall, with narrow, grass-like basal leaves and smaller, scattered leaves up the stem. The blooms are a magnet for native bees, butterflies, and skippers, and while seed production is modest, birds like finches may forage on them. Plant in full sun for best flowering and pair with other drought tolerant natives like Rattlesnake Master, Pink Coreopsis, Purple Coneflower, Narrowleaf Mountain-mint, and native grasses.
