Devil’s Bite Liatris scariosa
Aster FamilyDevil’s Bite is a distinctive species of Blazing Star known for its relatively late bloom time and exceptionally large, shaggy purple flower heads. Flowering starts in late summer and continues into fall, and is a particular favorite source of nectar for Monarch butterflies and many other long-tongued pollinators. Unlike many other Liatris species, Devil’s Bite is more tolerant of part shade and is well adapted to dry, nutrient-poor, sandy, or rocky soils. In rich, highly amended garden soil, plants may grow unusually tall and become top-heavy, increasing the likelihood of flopping. For the strongest growth, avoid excessive fertilization and plant Devil’s Bite among other prairie species that provide natural competition and structural support. Taller companions such as Northwind Switchgrass, Joe-Pye Weed, or Showy Goldenrod are good companion plants.
