    Standing-cypress (Ipomopsis rubra)
    Jacob’s Ladder Family

Standing Cypress is a biennial to short-lived perennial native to the southeastern U.S. In its first year, it forms a low rosette of feathery foliage. In the second year, it sends up an upright spike covered in vivid scarlet, tubular flowers that bloom from early to late summer. These flowers are highly attractive to Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, long-tongued bees, and butterflies. This species thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils with low to moderate fertility. It is drought-tolerant once established and prefers lean conditions—excess moisture or fertility may reduce lifespan. Though often biennial, I. rubra readily self-seeds, ensuring its continued presence in the landscape with minimal intervention. Standing Cypress adds vertical interest and color to prairie plantings, pollinator strips, and dry garden beds while supporting nectar needs during the summer bloom gap.
