    Hollow-stem Joe-pye Weed  (Eutrochium fistulosum)
    Aster Family

Hollow-stem Joe-pye Weed is a tall, clump-forming perennial. It produces large, mauve-pink flowers which bloom over several weeks from mid to late summer. The flowers are highly nectar-rich and attract a wide range of pollinators, especially Eastern Tiger Swallowtails.Stems are stout, hollow, flushed with purple, and are an important nesting site for cavity-nesting bees. Leaves are arranged in whorls, and also have strong purple tones in new growth. After flowering, the seed heads mature to a deep brown and persist into winter, providing structure and food for birds. This species is adaptable to various soils, including moist or wet conditions, and prefers full to part sun. It is very drought tolerant when established. It spreads readily by seed and can form large colonies, so it's best suited to meadow plantings or larger gardens. Cut back by half in early summer if shorter, bushier growth is desired.
