    Sandhill Gaillardia (Gaillardia aestivalis)
    Aster Family

Lanceleaf Blanketflower is a drought-tolerant, short-lived perennial native to the Southeastern U.S., including North Carolina’s Coastal Plain. It is the only Gaillardia species truly native to the state, although the more commonly seen Gaillardia pulchella—a non-native species—is often mistakenly marketed as native in the Coastal Plain. It produces daisy-like flowers from late spring through fall, typically in shades of yellow, though white and purple variations are possible variations. Growing 1–3 feet tall, it thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy or rocky soils, making it ideal for dry meadows, roadsides, and native plant gardens. This long-blooming wildflower is a magnet for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its deep taproot helps it withstand heat and poor soils, and it readily naturalizes in open, disturbed areas.
