    Cluster Bushmint (Hyptis alata)
    Mint Family

Clustered Bushmint, or musky mint, is known for its unique flower shape and structure. Each stem produces several layers of densely packed orbs of white flowers with purple speckles.  Flowers are held oppositely like two arms reaching from the stem body, stacking up the stem. It has an extended bloom time starting in late spring and continuing into fall. Flowers are followed by attractive seed heads which hold their structure through the winter while birds feed on the seeds. Hyptis is not as aggressive as other mints, but can spread by seed and rhizome in optimal conditions. In the wild it can be found in freshwater wetlands, pond margins, moist prairies, but tolerates average garden conditions with ease. It is the only member of its genus growing in the state and like most mints is considered to have high pollinator value, attracting a diverse array of pollinators.
