    Butterfly Pea, is a low-growing, twining vine commonly found in much of the southeastern US. From mid-summer through early fall it produces distinctive purple, butterfly-shaped flowers about 1–2 inches across. After flowering, it forms small, pea-like seedpods. It is typically found in dry, open woodlands where it sprawls across the ground or climbs lightly over nearby vegetation. This plant thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and part sun to part shade. Its low-growing, easy nature make it easy to pair with many natives. Plant at the base of small perennials or let sprawl gently over sedges or at the base of shrubs. Butterfly Pea is mainly pollinated by bumble bees, which are strong enough to manipulate the flower’s unique structure.
