Product Info
Little Bluestem 'Ha Ha Tonka' (Schizachyrium scoparium 'Ha Ha Tonka')
Grass Family‘Ha Ha Tonka’ is a cultivated selection of Little Bluestem. Foliage emerges blue-green in spring, often with tones of purple or maroon at the base. As the season progresses, the leaves deepen in color and transition to shades of red, burgundy, and copper in fall. Leaf blades are covered in dense hairs that provide a beautiful luminescence in the sun. The narrow, upright stems are topped with, silvery seed heads in late summer, providing visual interest and food for birds. Compared to the straight species, ‘Ha Ha Tonka’ is taller, more upright, and exceptional fall color. Like other Schizachyrium varieties, it supports native insects and serves as a host plant for several skipper butterfly species. It thrives in full sun and dry soils, including sandy or rocky conditions. Avoid fertilization and poorly drained sites, especially in winter.
