    Plantain-leaf Sedge (Carex plantaginea)
    Sedge Family

Plantain-leaved Sedge is a distinctive woodland sedge native to eastern North America. It is named for its broad, pleated, semi-evergreen leaves that resemble those of plantains, setting it apart from most finer-textured sedges. Clumps typically grow 8–12 inches tall and slowly spread to form a tidy, low groundcover. In early spring, it produces short flowering stalks with striking greenish-purple spikes. This species thrives in part to full shade and rich ins soils with consistent moisture. It is a larval host plant for several native butterflies and moths. Its dense clumps provide overwintering habitat for small invertebrates.
