Slender Woodoats (Chasmanthium laxum)
Grass FamilySlender Woodoats produces long, delicately spiky seed heads that grow distinctly upright, distinguishing it from its better-known relative, River Oats (C. latifolium). It can naturally be found in shady, moist habitats, but is adaptable to average garden soils and full sun with adequate moisture. Its seeds provide forage for small animals, while its foliage serves as a host plant for several species of moths and butterflies. Slender Woodoats makes an excellent filler for shade gardens, especially when planted among taller perennials as a ground cover or along the edge of a woodland. It is also considerably less aggressive than River Oats, making it a more manageable choice for many gardens.
