Cardinal Flower (White/Pink form) (Lobelia cardinalis)
    Bellflower Family

This species of Cardinal Flower is a naturally occurring color variant of the typically red-flowered cardinal flower. Like the standard red form, it grows in moist to wet soils and thrives in full sun to part shade. I can be planted in soils with average moisture if in a shadier location. This seed grown variant produces spikes of pink to white tubular flowers from mid-summer into early fall. Despite the color difference, the plant still attracts a wide range of pollinators. It is especially important for hummingbirds, which are drawn to the tubular flowers for nectar. It also serves as a host plant for the larvae of several moth species. This plant is short-lived but often reseeds in suitable conditions and can persist in a garden with consistent moisture. Because this variation is seed grown, traditional, all red plants are possible. There is a high likelihood of pink/white plants, but there is no guarantee
