Flowering starts in late summer and continues into fall, and is a particular favorite source of nectar for Monarch butterflies and many other long-tongued pollinators. Unlike many other Liatris species, Devil’s Bite is more tolerant of part shade and is well adapted to dry, nutrient-poor, sandy, or rocky soils. In rich, highly amended garden soil, plants may grow unusually tall and become top-heavy, increasing the likelihood of flopping. For the strongest growth, avoid excessive fertilization and plant Devil’s Bite among other prairie species that provide natural competition and structural support. Taller companions such as Northwind Switchgrass, Joe-Pye Weed, or Showy Goldenrod are good companion plants.

Blooms: Purple, 3-4 weeks, Sept-Oct
Leaves: Up to 12” long, gradually smaller up the stem
Height: 2-5’
Space: 18-24”
Soil: Avg-Dry, rocky, sandy
Exposure: Full sun-Part sun-Part shade
Fauna: Monarch and other butterflies, moth host plant
Seeds: Tufted, tan-colored achenes
Deer Resistance: Low
Zone: 3-8
Native Status: NC native, rare in the Piedmont and Mountains
Provenance: Unknown, seed grown
